A YouTuber recently shared how demoralizing it feels to pour hours into editing a video, only to get a meager 50 views in the first 24 hours.

He mentions that everyone who watches the video loves it, but claims YouTube is simply “not promoting” it. On the surface, his metrics look great: a 4.1% CTR and a 17:38 Average View Duration (AVD). Yet, these numbers don’t match the low view count.

Let’s analyze the video together and uncover the real problem. 🔗 Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1W3MOyrjUY
The Reality of the YouTube Algorithm
First, let’s clear up a common misconception: YouTube does not promote or push a creator’s videos. Instead, it finds and delivers the right videos for viewers based on their preferences, device, time of day, and behavior. Shifting to this perspective helps us as content creators better understand the platform and get better results. (Want to dive deeper? Check out my post: “How the YouTube Algorithm Works”).
1. The Packaging Problem
Let’s start with the packaging. The title is: “Burglin’ Gnomes SHOCKED Me!!!”
- Lack of clarity: The title lacks substance. As a viewer, it’s not clear what value or story you are getting.
- Generic phrasing: Using phrases like “SHOCKED Me!!!” feels generic and spammy.
- No context: It doesn’t signal whether this is a video game playthrough, a review, or audiovisual commentary.
Unless someone is already a hardcore fan of the creator or the specific game, they are unlikely to invest their time. When packaging a video, you must imagine a real person finding your thumbnail and title. It needs to feel irresistible. You can’t expect clicks just because you show up on their feed. If the first impression gives people no reason to click, that’s a negative signal to YouTube, and the system will stop showing it.
2. Surface Metrics vs. Advanced Analytics
While a 4.1% CTR and a 17:38 AVD seem excellent, looking at them as flat numbers can be misleading. The metrics on your main dashboard are a combined average of different traffic sources and audience types. Everything is lumped together, hiding what is actually happening under the hood.
- Hardcore Fans: Your loyal subscribers will visit your channel directly or click as soon as you upload. This inflates your CTR and AVD within that specific traffic source because they already love your content.
- New Audiences: If the video fails to convert new or casual viewers when shown on the Homepage or Suggested Videos, YouTube will stop pushing it there.
Your overall metrics might stay high because of your loyal core, but your reach stops dead. Without diving into advanced analytics, it’s impossible to understand what is truly happening in the viewer’s mind.
3. The Retention and Content Flaws
As I mentioned in my YouTube Metrics Guide for Beginners, metrics are just symptoms that help us answer critical questions about our audience—they aren’t milestones that automatically trigger a massive push from the algorithm. If they were, a 17-minute AVD would mean hundreds of thousands of views. It clearly doesn’t.
Beyond the packaging, does the actual video hold attention?
- Missing Hook: While the creator is charismatic and has great energy, the video lacks a proper hook. It takes 33 seconds just to show the actual video game. A casual viewer with no prior attachment to the creator would have clicked away by second 3.
- Stream Dump: Once the gameplay starts, it becomes obvious that this is a repurposed Twitch stream. He is simply playing a game with other people.
The Verdict
If your main strength is your personality and how entertaining you are to watch, that needs to be front and center within the first few seconds to grab attention.
Cut the slow parts, script a tight intro for edited videos, and leave unedited stream archives for the YouTube Live section.
